Full Alert is Lam's spin on Heat (which came out 2 years prior,) and it's nearly just as intelligent, emotional, and captivating, but is much more compacted, being nearly 1 hour and 15 minutes shorter. Where Michael Mann elaborates and punctuates, Lam boils down and compresses. Heat is effective in its detailed depth, while Full Alert has momentum in its lack of girth. Both are effective, different styles.
This cop flick breaks little new ground but does a good job covering many of the familiar cop-show tropes. The opening credit sequence is excellent. There’s also a nice climax with some very fine closing lines.
