I really liked this one. Tsukamoto created an atmosphere of real dread and uneasiness. The whole thing with the well also reminded me of Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. And it's very beautiful and ethereal. A really cool, really underrated gem. Glad I saw this one.
Languid in its pace, unaffected in emotion, and strange and weird for no reason at times that cancel out its attempt to upset. Like Tsukamoto's other work, it's gorgeous to look at, but alienating and non-involving because of his out-of-tune rhythm, constant talky scenes that treat its dramatic stakes too subtle, and feeling indifferent to both dramatic and emotional, suspense and tension devices. Disaffecting.
A compelling, atmospheric mystery, but not really one of Tsukamoto's best. Highly original with a tense, eerie atmosphere and a number of powerful moments, but the plot is heavy-handed and difficult to follow at times. Not among the best, but a solid effort, particularly for fans of Japanese horror.
i dont know man, maybe tsukamoto's weakest link is gemini but it was one of the creepiest films I've seen in a very very long time.possibly one of the most underrated films of the decade. it was, i dont know it was bizarre. its like every shot has been well calculated to make us feel that something's not right.
