Howard Hawks manages to create an enchanting and extravagant musical filled with plenty of glitz and glam. Both Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe are absolutely radiant in this film, but what really surprised me was there comedic chops! These two are hilarious together and have amazing chemistry. This is a fun enough musical filled with some great choreography and some iconic tunes!
Classic musical from Hawks that plays to the best strengths of both its stars; Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. The story of a gold digger and her best friend is well told with memorable characterizations and song score. Is there anything more iconic in Monroe legend then her performance of 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' in that sublime pink gown? Mind you it's Russell who has the naughty lines.
Relentlessly funny & witty Hawks' musical with Monroe & Russell as a perfect one-two punch satirising 50s misogynistic stereotypes whilst showing women as the ones genuinely calling the shots in a world controlled by men. Marilyn is at the top of her game irradiating "animal magnetism" as the glamorous bimbo along with the cerebral eloquent Russell for a perfect balance. Iconic "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend".
Beautiful, racy, & utterly charming, Hawks' musical is a lightweight affair that adheres to & subverts the roles of women in the 50's. Monroe is at the peak of her powers here, as the blonde who knows when to play dumb. The plot may amble along on a boat, but the sheer entertainment value is undeniable no matter if it ends w/ a courtroom musical number & double-wedding. It's simple & delightful cinematic confection.
