Gorgeously photographed and directed with rare economy of narrative Emmer's drama revisits, with slightly smoothed edges, the Pasolinian program of the proletariat's temper, its plights but also its micro-solidarities. Along with this the motIf of the holy prostitute is ecstatically portrayed by Vlady in the red light districts of Amsterdam in stark contrast to the darkness of work in the mines. A trilingual gem!
Co-written by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Two main locations we're not so used to see in movies. In a coal mine, 1000 meters below ground level and the Red District of Amsterdam in front of Marina Vlady's glass window. One of the main interests of this film is the communication theme as Ventura and Fresson speak only Italian while their girlfriends are only speaking Dutch. In fact, there's a lot to think about in this film.
