Never heard of this dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and his famous work who gave the name of this movie. I was into this just for Scarlett Johansson. Her resemblance with that girl inside the painting is kinda perfect. The movie doesn't act like a biography movie and doesn't give much about Vermeer. Instead the action focus more on Johansson's character (too much). Such movies are sources of new informations. 6.5/10
Scarlett Johansson look almost like she was the design for one of the most iconic and famous paintings of all time makes this biographic movie feel right most of the time, but there is not enough drama and oomph as the movie settles for the safest plot and tensions throughout the movie as the most drama is from the jealous painter's daughter who clearly wants to painted herself.
You don't know. You get mixed up. What is it? Drama, romance, biography, protection from prostitution, how painters work, insights of creativeness? Anyway. For sure it is a portrait masterpiece and the movie impressively tells us, how it happened. Unforgettable. Great 19-year-old Scarlett Johansson, starting point of her career.
beautifully filmed in a manner that reflects the character of the paintings at issue – that alone raises this story to a level of beauty. Colin Firth? Well, he doesn;'t quite do it, but sufficiently so to make this film work. I watched with an artists friend and we both loved it.
