In the ’30s a man is obsessed with a painting of a woman that reminds him of his long-lost mother. He models his girlfriend exactly after the woman in the painting and after she attempts to commit suicide she is committed into a sanatorium.

7/10 This reminded me a bit of Tadeusz Konwicki's later films, wherein time, character, space, so much is confounded, but this surely rings a Romanian bell. The later sequences, delirium. Daneliuc is clearly a hero much deserving of more recognition.
A film whose greatest incontestable artistic merit is that it shouldn't have existed in its time, but it did. It may not make a lot of sense now, but as an expression of endless disgust with Ceausescu's Romania (see the incredible final scene) it is an imperishable achievement.
