Rewatched for the 2nd time after 9 years. It perfectly shows how Ben started to establish himself as debut director, some of moments flops, but overall it's a really great piece of filmmaking. Amy Ryan is outstanding in supporting role. 4stars with a small credit.
So if it's between your beloved lover/good man that does the moral & right thing (give the girl back to her biological mother) and the wrong ('right')/immoral thing (i.e. let her live with Morgan Freeman who wanted her to be but a 'replacement kid'), you walk out on him, 'cause you disagree on a philosophical level? Casey chose with his morals and ethics, thus you leave? Sour taste indeed. Monaghan & Affleck are ace.
Bizarre and atypical cop drama. It's this odd feel about it that makes this film somehow a tricky watch. It does not get any easier by the end when terrible secrets are revealed. Meandering through the realms of fantasy does not pay off. A more solid grasp on reality would have been appreciated. Its cool aura and street-wisdom do not ring true. Affleck tried too hard to make an impact and lost the plot somehow.
If there's one thing Ben Affleck is good at doing, it's convincing me to never visit Boston. It didn't particularly captivate me while I was watching it, but it held my interest. I thought the whole explanation behind the kidnapping was a little bogus though.
