3,5 stars (if stars means something). I wasn't that engaged. Hou Hsiao Hsien is still one the last great cinematographers of the pre-digital-oversaturation's era.
Evocative with strong political undertones and a two fold emotional arc. In transit between former & latter styles, from gritty realism towards modern impressionism.

We are all affected by our social history, whether we are aware of it or not. I haven't seen a film capture this notion as well as "Good men, good women". It also displays some of Hou's (and Chen Huai-en's) most inventive cinematography.
