Ratings & Reviews

  1. Eugénie's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

    Ravissant petit cabinet de curiosités.

  2. Ludovic72's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

  3. fearraigh's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

Conceptually little more than a sketch but the cheerful wonder of the animation is irresistible. A clear influence on Terry Gilliam's Monty Python work and the use of the Pont de Gard as a railway bridge is an imaginative leap that makes me want to watch this over and over.

  4. FISCHER's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

  5. BUSTER TIERNEY's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

  6. Kamran's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

Animation & photography almost ascetic in its sparsity. unsubstantial beyond this minor intrigue. 71/100 - Good.

  7. Loke's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

    A small bite of beauty.

  8. lou.'s rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

Finalement!

  9. EdieEmm's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

Really, Borowczyk was as much an intellectual heavyweight as any of his Paris contemporaries. An encyclopedia, in screen orientation rather than letter; a subversion of the ordering & mastery of the world represented by its Victorian iconographies - mastery of knowledge, of geographical space, of cultures & people, of one's mind - decontextualized, & exposed as the constructed mimetic (& memetic!) fiction it was/is.

  11. captainfez's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

That dude is REALLY excited about using his saw.

  12. findfilm's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

A mere 6 minutes of cinematic charm - a (automobile) b (ballon) and c (chemin de fer - railway) in turn demonstrating the power of cartoon but in this case using intricately drawn scenes of urban and rural France. A clear mocking of the destructive power of automation done in a style that predates Monty Python but quite obviously shows where their ideas were incubated. Repeat playing irresistible.

  13. Adam Whybray's rating of the film Grandma's Encyclopedia

Utterly non-essential but it made me smile like a loon. Recalls Max Ernst's 'Une semaine de bonté' but far daffier. You can really see the influence upon Terry Gilliam here. I was impressed by the zoom into the static, illustrated landscape from the carriage of the balloon, which was used as a frame - a simple technique, but not one I'd seen before.
