The locations and particularly the houses and Paraiso Perduto did it for me - I loved the layer of sensuality and tension kept throughout the entire film and Francesco Clemente's art. Mrs. Dinsmoor is. such. a class. goal. Also green. Tons of green. Green is Estella's unapproachable nature to me, and her presence in Finn's life.
One of the most beautifully crafted studio films of the 90s. The 90s were a cultural wasteland and so when someone like Cuarón was handed a predictable script, he did the best he could with it. Eminently watchable even when they're sold short by their studio trappings. And anything shot by Emmanuel Lubezki is going to be awesome. The most passionate chapter in his love affair with the colour green.
