PBS ruined costume dramas for me. They just won't stop making them. There's this huge industry in England where they keep churning this crap out like a factory. I just got sick of them. Now when I say costume drama, I just mean the old England high literary shite.
Lean avoids the narrative pitfall's of and dangerous forms of Victorian romanticism another filmmaker may have fell for and stay's focused on the objective in all aspects.
A consummate transposition of Dickens that captures the rich and fruity fresco of his storytelling. All elements coalesce with deftness and sureness of ambition, despite the occasional longuere. The sureness of touch almost makes you believe it could never be any other way.
One of the greatest Book-to-Movie adaptations of all time
"I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be."
I didn't have any particular expectations for this movie actually, but it was pretty good!
== 150 years ago Dickens wrote Great Expectations & David Lean adapted it to the movies 70 years ago. All this is surprisingly & somehow sadly, very modern. A masterpiece.
"In trying of becoming a gentleman I had succeeded in becoming a snob."
I find it ironic that some of the finest movies about romance were produced in Britain during the 40's.
Remarkable. Bernard Miles' caterpillar eyebrows and Alec Guiness as David Sylvian from Japan. Didn't fancy Estella at all, rather harpooned it for me.
David Lean right in the Dickensian groove. Fantastic atmospheric realisation of the novel, with just enough omitted to keep the themes intact and to unrelentingly fix our attention. Magwitch for PM!
Great cinematography in such a wonderful adaptation of a great piece of literature...highly recommended.
The first few scenes with pip on the marches, are pure cinematic beauty. So atmospheric with the fog and silhouetted characters .A cinematographers wet dream.
Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" is very difficult to adapt - but this film is one of the best adaptations I've seen. In my opinion it's not as strong as David Lean's "Oliver Twist" but nonetheless it persuades through its strong cinematography and the change between very quiet and very dynamic sequences.
