Our take

Chemistry happens in classroom test tubes and also fizzes amorously in the air in this coming-of-age classic by Bill Forsyth. Picking a charming gaggle of amateur actors to play his puckish boys and girls, the treasured Scottish writer-director assembled a winning team for his sparkling second film.
