What a film! Atmospheric cinematography! Great direction! Realistic and sympathetic characters! Inspiring music & fantastic processional scenes! One of the most neglected films in cinema history - some ignorant people have called this a propaganda film, which is total rubbish. It is a film of its time, that is all - and what a great year 1933 was for Germany. The only puzzle is why it was called Westmar & not Wessel.
Possibly one of the greatest films ever made. Wonderful acting and brilliant direction by Wenzler: a deeply moving story with a tragic ending. This will warm the cockles of anyone's heart. And the Horst-Wessel-Lied is one of my favourite tunes. I wish I could give this TEN stars!
