wonderfully made (there´s no ugly old witches here, everyone is extremely pretty, what sometimes makes it bizarre), thrilling, sad, floating between realms. like reading a fairy tale, the happy end doesn´t make you immediately forget all the bizarre and sad happenings that resulted in it. the atmosphere of unknown and possible, magical and bleak, stays.
Just scrapes 4 stars, I really really liked it. The performances were great, it was very creepy most of the time and the special effects were spectacular. The film has such an imagination. It is genuinely crazy. But this is, at times, it's downfall. It aims for too much and goes on too many tangents that it struggles to be as coherent as it could be. Still, do not pass up this highly original, fantastic film
I was expecting 'Tim Burton by way of Asian horror.' And that's basically what I got for about 20 minutes. But this is one of the most unpredictable films I've seen in some time. By the end, director Yim Pil-Sung had dealt with topics as heavy as child abuse/neglect, cannibalism, serial murderers - all while keeping the feel of a dark fairy tale for adults. I can't deny it was an emotional, gut-wrenching experience.
Oriental fantasy movies are always filled with so many ideas ! It's refreshing ! But, the references to old fairy tales are not needed. We can invent new ones that are just as good ! There is no god to follow. Nice composer's music work too, without the digital orchestral sounds too often heard.
