First series was shattering, if a little overbaked in the final episode. The second could not sustain the intensity of the first. It may have a similar trajectory as 'Broadchurch'; the difficult second album followed by a renaissance.
This was about as intense as a crime drama can get. These people seem to live in a perpetual state of misery, and they get as violent and desperate as humanly possible.
Unfortunately the second season doesn't keep up with the first. Great acting all around.
Realistic murders and remarkable actors. BBC still rules. Strongly recommended.
A series about how James Norton can't hold a candle to Sarah Lancashire. Highly enjoyable as a grainy misery narrative, much less as a crime story.
