Ratings & Reviews

  1. LibertyCapz's rating of the film Harakiri

This is now, without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite samurai film. Brilliantly shot and edited, and with continually unfolding and thickening plot that keeps the viewer hooked the whole way through. This is the first I've seen of Kobayashi's stuff, definitely need to check out some more of this guy's works.

  4. gld48's rating of the film Harakiri

Kurosawa is high entertainment - Kobayashi is art

  5. AdrianM.'s rating of the film Harakiri

One can only aspire to be as cool as Tsugumo

  6. Ben Nash's rating of the film Harakiri

Nakadai's glare is sharper than any of the swords in this movie.

  7. samuraiargento's rating of the film Harakiri

  8. ceknklsn's rating of the film Harakiri

  9. Lex Lucas's rating of the film Harakiri

A must see. Tensed. Beautiful. A critique on traditions. Dusk of life. A tragedy. Man... I loved it. The rythm of the dialogue and the compositions are great.

  10. $ROBINROSA$'s rating of the film Harakiri

    multi levelled reality and appearances.

  11. FISCHER's rating of the film Harakiri

Un chef-d'oeuvre tranchant du cinéma nippon ! www.cinefiches.com

  12. Viginti_tres's rating of the film Harakiri

A clever joke re-spun into a tragedy by the layers of humanity that gradually accrue in its telling. Kobayashi, unlike Kurosawa, has a disdain for the action he displays (albeit a respectful one) which alone subverts the samurai genre entirely.

  13. luís debonoir's rating of the film Harakiri

  14. Luis Pires's rating of the film Harakiri

Cinematography, soundtrack, storytelling! Also, feels like a major inspiration on Tarantino's 'Kill Bill', along with 'Lady Snowblood'.

  15. Wee Hunk's rating of the film Harakiri

Why in the world would you remake this film? It's almost perfect, aside from the tentativeness that Tatsuya Nakadai had from using real swords. A practice that was later banned. The lighting is masterful, and the suspense just built and built. We got to see him be more than just an avenging angel. He was a bit like Columbo with those, "And another thing .."

  16. Howard Fritzson's rating of the film Harakiri

Kobayashi is a master of lateral tracking shots. They are so subtly expressive. Every camera move makes a point. I love being in the hands of a great craftsman.

  17. Smooli's rating of the film Harakiri

Quite frankly my #1 go-to movie when discussing perfect pacing, structuring, and story-composition. It is simply amazing how well this movie was done by Masaki Kobayashi.

  18. MrArkan's rating of the film Harakiri

  19. Kevin Costner's rating of the film Harakiri

Tatsuya Nakadai is a badass !!

  20. Fabio Osvaldo Carta's rating of the film Harakiri

  21. Kamran's rating of the film Harakiri

Few films compare when regarding the meticulous detail and affecting nature of each structured composition. Film as craft. 94/100 - Amazing.

  22. Andrew Miller's rating of the film Harakiri

Astonishingly intense, tear-your-hair-out (as you watch) cinema.

  23. Jake.Durston's rating of the film Harakiri

"Swordsmanship untested in battle is like the art of swimming mastered on land."

  24. Alexander Dunkelberger's rating of the film Harakiri

Rarely is a film so meticulously crafted and perfected on all it's fronts in the way this is: cinematically, artistically, politically, emotionally, and in sheer entertainment. This is masterwork that with great style and mastery of the craft paints a picture of a hypocritical society and of great human suffering. No punches are pulled here, not emotionally and certainly not viscerally.
