Ratings & Reviews

  1. Amin Lumière's rating of the film Harakiri

Rewatch/ 12 years later and still kick ass.

  2. Duarte Ferreira's rating of the film Harakiri

4.5/5 - A perfectly orchestrated technical and emotional achievement of chanbara cinema, Harakiri, my entry point into Kobayashi's legendary oeuvre, deals with the integral depths and ironies that made up the rigid sociopolitical mentality of feudal Japan. Absolutely unflinching and moving, a true landmark of Japanese cinema.

  3. Zachary T.'s rating of the film Harakiri

In technique alone its influence is ubiquitous, transcending the genre it dutifully deconstructs for a profound indictment of institutional hypocrisy and ideological absolutism. Sensitive, elegant, and timeless.

  4. Eric Eidelstein's rating of the film Harakiri

And I couldn't help but wonder, “What is a code of honor? Is it just a mask little boys like to put on and forget to take off?”

  7. John Matrix's rating of the film Harakiri

As structurally sound as a master-engineered bridge. The epitome of slow-burn pacing, with a fantastically satisfying payoff. Beautiful composition and framing, but not so beautiful that it distracts. Measured, compelling performances. Direct in its thematic delivery without overstating it. Perfection.

  8. Daniel's rating of the film Harakiri

    My introduction to Kobayashi.

  9. Travis James's rating of the film Harakiri

This film is one of the best that I have ever seen. The story, the characters and how everything unfolds. It is a near perfect film. Incredible

  10. LibertyCapz's rating of the film Harakiri

This is now, without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite samurai film. Brilliantly shot and edited, and with continually unfolding and thickening plot that keeps the viewer hooked the whole way through. This is the first I've seen of Kobayashi's stuff, definitely need to check out some more of this guy's works.

  13. gld48's rating of the film Harakiri

Kurosawa is high entertainment - Kobayashi is art

  14. AdrianM.'s rating of the film Harakiri

One can only aspire to be as cool as Tsugumo

  15. Ben Nash's rating of the film Harakiri

Nakadai's glare is sharper than any of the swords in this movie.

  16. samuraiargento's rating of the film Harakiri

  17. ceknklsn's rating of the film Harakiri

  18. Jdsarmientoburgos's rating of the film Harakiri

If you dig Samurai flicks look no further, as Harakiri offers the sword fights you asked for along with the complexity of Japanese culture and a visual style of beauty. That final duel is why I reckon there's still such a niche for Samurai films.

  19. Lex Lucas's rating of the film Harakiri

A must see. Tensed. Beautiful. A critique on traditions. Dusk of life. A tragedy. Man... I loved it. The rythm of the dialogue and the compositions are great.

  20. $ROBINROSA$'s rating of the film Harakiri

    multi levelled reality and appearances.

  21. FISCHER's rating of the film Harakiri

Un chef-d'oeuvre tranchant du cinéma nippon ! www.cinefiches.com

  22. Viginti_tres's rating of the film Harakiri

A clever joke re-spun into a tragedy by the layers of humanity that gradually accrue in its telling. Kobayashi, unlike Kurosawa, has a disdain for the action he displays (albeit a respectful one) which alone subverts the samurai genre entirely.

  23. luís debonoir's rating of the film Harakiri

  24. Luis Pires's rating of the film Harakiri

Cinematography, soundtrack, storytelling! Also, feels like a major inspiration on Tarantino's 'Kill Bill', along with 'Lady Snowblood'.
