Nearly a century after it was first released, this one-of-a-kind whatsit “documentary” about black magic, paganism, and assorted devilry can be seen today as a curious precursor to several surprisingly different kinds of film. Certainly there’s whiff of HAXAN in the medieval tales of Bergman. THE MAGICIAN, THE VIRGIN SPRING, and especially THE SEVENTH SEAL all quote its themes and images….
