i decided to check this movie out after my friends at school told me they watched it in french class and said it was very weird, with an unexpected plot twist. of course that made me curious but because i knew something was coming i was able to guess where the movie was heading so i was just waiting for conformation about my guesses during watching. but i love audrey tautou and it was still an entertaining watch.
The other side of the coin to Amelie. Its narrative construct echoes Rashomon with versions of events brought to the fore. Perceptions are brought to the limelight and misinterpretations of each character add to the tension. Tautou is astonishing in this borderline thriller.
It gets off to an awkward start, with pacing too brisk and underdeveloped characters, but an original midpoint twist makes everything fall into place. A gimmick maybe, but a cleverly-employed one that works thanks in no small part to the smart writing and strong performances.
