The other side of the coin to Amelie. Its narrative construct echoes Rashomon with versions of events brought to the fore. Perceptions are brought to the limelight and misinterpretations of each character add to the tension. Tautou is astonishing in this borderline thriller.
It gets off to an awkward start, with pacing too brisk and underdeveloped characters, but an original midpoint twist makes everything fall into place. A gimmick maybe, but a cleverly-employed one that works thanks in no small part to the smart writing and strong performances.
