I don't think I've ever turned a movie off 15 minutes from the ending not due to the scene I was watching but because my tolerance for the film as a whole had been utterly worn away. Misery Porn Meets Twee Indie has got to be the most repellent combination of genre aesthetics I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing.
Makes you wonder how something so unquestionably repulsive can actually be so good. If you are put off by Hesher's rude and distasteful character, hang in there, that's actually what makes this story work. Joseph Gordon-Levitt easily takes the credit for his absolutely wrecking performance as the cold-blooded anarchist, alongside the young actor, Devin Brochu. It's a weirdly fascinating story.
Pretty terrible film misconceived on almost every level. Predictable pablum full of unlikable characters we couldn't care less about. Have always sung Gordon-Levitt's praises but even he's awful in this one. "Hesher", "Thor", "Your Highness"....Natalie Portman needs a new agent.
