Great little film that really has no business working. The plot is unbelievable at times and it almost feels like they took two crap scripts and cobbled this one out of them. It succeeds on Mitchum's trademark non-chalant cool and Price's hamminess. It also helps to have eye candy look Russell walking around showing off her race course like curves. Cool and def unique noir here.
What a weird film this is. It's as though two directors were making the film, one thought it was a noir and the other thought it was a camp Boy's Own comedy. It's only in the cutting room some poor sod had to try and stitch it all together. And the result is an omelette. I loved the idea of the Nazi plastic surgeon who took 2 minutes to find a vein... Amusing film, but over-long.
Laconic film noir melodrama suffers from an overlong, muddled plot and some major tonal shifts. Elements of violent crime thriller, romantic melodrama, and offbeat comedy are strong independently, but mix uneasily. What pulls it through is the cast - Mitchum with his unique brand of cool and Price at his hammy best - spouting some razor-sharp dialogue in stylishly-shot exotic locales.
