A compelling performance by Nicholson is overshadowed by a meandering and repetitious narrative. There’s many interesting moments, but Mamet seems to get lost in the minutia of Hoffa’s intricacies without ever framing them in the story at large. Ultimately, despite covering a lot of ground, the film feels incomplete. PS. Boy, is DeVito having a lot of fun behind the camera with those transitions...
