Just out of college, a young idealist filmmaker joined a secretive spiritualist community led by a charismatic guru. With camera in hand, this person documented 20 years of living inside a cult and the changing worldviews it elicited.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what's now showing
Will Allen looks back on his 22 years with a cult led by failed actor Michel Gomez who crafted the ultimate role for himself....living disciple of God! What's interesting is the interviewees seem to be mostly intelligent people whose insecurities and needs to belong/serve were exploited by a self serving so-called prophet. But 22 years? Fascinating throughout with an abundance of footage shot throughout the years.
What a hell this people went through... What I liked the most was that at the very end of this cringing documentary, I could see that life went on for several of them and they (kind of) seem to have found real happiness in their lives.
Cult leaders are all the same; same characteristics and personality traits, identical motives, they operate in similar ways and for the most part cults tend to play out the same way every time. But even so, when presented with a story like this that spans over such a long period of time, one can't help but to still be completely mystified at the gullibility/lack of critical thinking some people display. Fascinating.
