Cinematographically, this is an astonishing piece and a real advance compared to the previous Heimat films. But narrative-wise, I'm not entirely sure where to situate this. It is certainly good, and enjoyable, when you have seen the Heimat trilogy. But I didn't find it as gripping.
Historical "quality" film, or how the cinematic expression can be reduced to the lowest common denominator. "Exemplary" story with artistic precepts, in which the digital teams up with a "photoshop" purpose and image acquires an hyper-meaning, simultaneously reducer and pleonastic. The banality of "art cinema" in all its obvious expression. As Von Trier, Spielberg,Reygadas, Haneke,Wenders... "Arte" is their channel
the best kind of traditional saga: emotional, classy and strongly constructed.
A beautiful, interesting historically and universally, at times poetical or touching film.
Die Andere Heimat is an epic tale of aspiration, hope and (broken) dreams. It's a captivating, moving and surprisingly funny masterpiece. Plus, Werner Herzog's cameo at the end - what an icing on the cake!
