I'm really torn about how to rate this. As a film, Swades is really good; as a guilt trip aimed at NRIs, it's kind of gross. It's a shame to have a film so well-realised be so iffy at the same time. Uncomfortable, too, that the village which functions as a stand-in for India at large seems to have no space for religious expressions or myths that are not Hindu.
