  1. L'immoralistee's rating of the film House by the River

  2. Graceful Photon's rating of the film House by the River

At times overwrought and painfully slow (until the precipitous conclusion), there's none the less undeniable tension here, and the brooding mood and atmospheric imagery makes the picture worth while. In some ways it seems like an antecedent of pictures like Night of the Hunter.

  3. Stefan Drees's rating of the film House by the River

The film comes to the point straightforwardly. The b/w photography is very atmospheric, and George Antheil did a great job in writing the score. There are some incredible audiovisual moments, e.g. the montage with Emily in the bathroom and Stephen in the garden, underlined with recitative-like musical textures (containing tender woodwind phrases over string tremolos).

  4. FISCHER's rating of the film House by the River

  5. bulgrin's rating of the film House by the River

Would like to give a 3.5 for the atmosphere and style. This is not an extraordinary but still enjoyable crime movie.

  6. patchwork's rating of the film House by the River

  7. richardlawrn's rating of the film House by the River

I liked it but the ending kinda let me down...I guess I was expecting a chase outdoors or something...

  8. Michael Zyx MH Claes's rating of the film House by the River

Not one of the best Fritz LANG, from far ...

  10. Sudipto Basu's rating of the film House by the River

On first viewing, this did not leave much of an impression. But I recently remember how uncanny it felt, a series of mishaps happening within a limited space, always a gaze seemingly witnessing. Like Night of the Hunter, I believe this film can only be read as nightmare.

  11. Axel's rating of the film House by the River

  12. bleu_velours's rating of the film House by the River

  13. Nicolas's rating of the film House by the River

  14. cyrikelly's rating of the film House by the River

Un film haletant, un pur régal. Merci M. FRITZ LANG.

  15. Samuel Andrade's rating of the film House by the River

★★★★ a suspense to die for.

  16. jacobcarter1995's rating of the film House by the River

I haven't watched many Fritz Lang films, but based on the ones I've seen I do not think you could pay be enough money to sit down to dinner with one of his protagonists. Nevertheless, I am always drawn in by the dark atmosphere that Lang conjures up. Parts of the film were a little too ridiculous (not a fan of the ending), but overall it was pretty solid.

  17. El Biffo's rating of the film House by the River

3.8 stars.....Fritz Lang was a brilliant director, and he does the criminal mind so well, but ultimately this is just another mid-century Hollywood film, well-done, but not particularly special.

  18. Noah Lethbridge's rating of the film House by the River

    Eerie. Great story. Great film.

  19. Weston Campbell's rating of the film House by the River

Grade-A thriller as much akin to the horror films of Val Lewton as to film-noir.

  20. mjgildea's rating of the film House by the River

3 1/2 out of 5 stars. The story and performances weren't anything impressive but Lang's eerie and atmospheric noir treatment really made House By the River into something more than it should've been. An unknown gem deserving of more attention than it gets.

  21. msmichel's rating of the film House by the River

Atmospheric mid-period 'B' pic from director Lang that though with an obvious limited budget is very successful in capturing a somewhat lurid thriller. Casting is nothing special but the visual panache and a knowing script go a long way. Well worth discovering.

  22. ArmandS's rating of the film House by the River

Not too shabby. Louis Hayward oozes, in every diabolical way, the personality of a demented, sleazy writer and callous cad. Melodramatic, to be sure, but still entertaining and atmospheric.

  23. Buddy Love's rating of the film House by the River

A great movie for most directors.. Weak in areas not up to Fritz's previous standards.
