This is a very short (2.5 minutes) collection of vintage Chinese images. The clips are drawn from numerous movies that clearly share the same narrative structures and visual grammar, so they actually work to create something like a coherent piece. Fun to look at, especially for the fashion and the music, but ultimately it seems just like a lark.
A fascinating, melancholy and beautiful companion piece to In the Mood for Love. It's telling that Wong mostly chooses images of women from this treasure trove of old Chinese films - women whose fashion echoes Maggie Chung's elegance - as this small piece seeks to capture the sensual allure of nitrate film, the warm look and feel of the material itself, rather than use found footage to construct narrative momentum.
