I Am Sun Mu

Directed by Adam Sjöberg
United States, 2015

Operating under a pseudonym which means ‘no boundaries’ – North Korean defector Sun Mu creates political pop art based on his life, homeland, and hope for a future united Korea. His hidden identity is nearly compromised when a massive historical exhibit in Beijing is shuttered.

  • ejonline's rating of the film I Am Sun Mu

Having watched a handful of documentaries on North Korea, this one felt the most like telling rather than showing. Perhaps it is hard to capture the full context of Sun Mu's work without putting them at more risk for detention (and more), but I never got a good sense of the impact of his work or what was gained. It did, however, provide insight into the relationship China has with North Korea. Left me wanting more.
