there's a strange grip to dolan's films, to some of them anyway, that absorbs one in a somewhat quirky way. as always with his work its flaws underpins its unmistakeable quality; it's an impressive debut containing interesting yet not fully executed ideas; however my favourite remains "juste la fin du monde"
0 stars. trash. a much more interesting take would've been from the mother's perspective, who has to put up with the protagonist's teenage bullshit the entire film. a friend of mine recommended me this saying that she was amazed that a 16 year old had written, directed, & starred in a film. this is very much a film that a 16 year old would make: immature, one dimensional, fake deep, BORING. hated this movie.
emotional coming of age film. xavier dolan's directorial debut has its flaws, but that's also what makes the movie extremely raw, truthful and relatable. it resonated with me in an almost scary way, i felt like someone spied me in my teenage years and made a movie out of it. great performance from anne dorval, so natural and honest. and weird - very "teenagy"/experimental - use of the shots.
I dare to say that this could be one of the best movie of Dolan, the main interest, a mother, a son and lack of understanding, probably many of us identify with this situation. As original name "J'ai Tué Ma Mère", is the empathy and deeply love that we have for our mother, even when we discuss or we move away, and Dolan, draft this perfectly at the screen.
Dolan's film is a passionate ode to the ordinary, suburban lives of a mother and child. Dorval's portrayal of a burdened, unwanting mother is nothing short of brilliant, along with Dolan's performance. It is a hallmark for up-and-coming film directors, writers and actors alike to reach for the stars and demonstrate their best talents on the screen even if it's their first performance.
