Zhang Ke had the wit to fascinate us with superbly composed frames of desolated and abandoned landscapes, just as he already did in “Still Life”(2006) or “24 City”(2008). Full review: http://www.alwayswatchgoodmovies.blogspot.pt/2012/08/i-wish-i-knew-2010.html

  6. Holyphool's rating of the film I Wish I Knew

Watched this recently at a Film Festival in New Zealand. Film is so superbly shot (Yu Lik-Wai cinematographer supreme!) edited, scored it becomes a mesmeric, moving evocation of beauty & decay in Shanghai. Interviewing many political, cinematic people, actors from the great past of Chinese cinema, it evokes so much about China that for most Westerners it will seem like a glimpse into another planet....

Zhangke is creating a new way of filming urbanism through the collage of documentary and narrative. This is a fine masterpiece indeed.
