Another doomed Idiot. At the 40-minute mark I began to wonder: this two-hour film was still only in the early pages of the book. It turns out that Pyryev was only able to shoot the first part of Dostoevsky's novel, so Rogozhin and Nastasia racing away by sleigh through the snowy night is how the film ends. So it goes. This is a lurid, theatrical film, not at all bad: but no candle to Kurosawa's crippled masterwork.
