A film that confirms the decline of a talented director. This is difficult to demarcate from any mainstream (US) drama with artistic pretensions. Terrible slow motion shots and visceral without any compensatory mechanism. Interiors in Germany and landscapes in Greece reflect well the grim political proceedings and the juxtaposition between legalism and thug subculture. Politically incomplete, artistically sterile.
Diane Kruger gives an incredible and powerful performance in this intense drama that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole way through and offers up some hard questions on loss, grief, vengeance, and the amount of importance we put on other peoples lives and how well the justice system works and what really is justice.
Fatih Akın : he gets human emotions. The deep reasons why people does what they do. The U_turns of peoples decisions, the idealism of : family values : work justice ethics and ofcourse love: He knows how to make us feel them all. It was the most brutal movie of him to watch for me and I did watch al of them. I must say Faboulous work... Long time well deserved awards! Thank you Fatih Akın.
Powerful film featuring a staggering performance by Diane Kruger that is a complete return to form for director Fatih Akin. What could have been a generic courtroom or revenge film becomes so much more with Akin's detailed scripting and Kruger's thoughtful and complex turn.
"Any other jobs you have..?" (pause)*looks him dead in the eye* "M U T T E R."//What does one do with a broken heart? Mend it? Course not. One suicides it up into a million pieces so no one else will ever break it again. Got gut-punched hard. Don't care if she doesn't get an Oscar nod in a coupla days. She already won at Cannes: way more prestigious & filmy. Her performance is absolutely haunting & one for the books.
3,5 (For 13 years a trio of nazis bombed and murdered several foreigners around Germany. For 13 years the police attributed this deaths to the turkish/kurdish mafia, even though they had hints that pointed to the nazi scene. Only when two member of the trio killed themselves, the police finally came up revealing it was nazis and not mafia doing it. This movie is not propaganda. It´s even less dramatic than reality.)
This movie made the mistake that almost all hollywood movies do. The first minutes tell just how all the remaining scenes will be. Maybe that was the objetive of Fatih, maybe not. Also the director at a given point could have guided us to another direction, perhaps one more interesting and less expected. A more subtle way of the consequences of losing a husband and a child, at first sight, Blue of Kieslowski.
