I can imagine the original shock value of this film has worn off as years passed, its poetic portrayal of passionate dive into madness of love and desire has definitely remained intact. Beautifully shot in colour, the visual side is gorgeous with its subtle use of light and careful framing. The pre-WW2 Japan (Tokyo?) setting adds even more to the unique flavour. What a journey into the ream of the senses!
Che dire? Talmente forte da toccare gli estremi del piacere cinematografico. Gofredo Fofi, ai tempi, ne fece una recensione in cui ne declamava il capolavoro assoluto. All'epoca, pur affascinato dal film, non avevo colto la portata della critica. A distanza di tempo rivedendolo non posso che dirmi in assoluto d'accordo con il grande Fofi.
This leaves me confused. Is it porn disguised as art or otherwise? Is it the story of two people totally interwoven with eachother or is that only a vehicle to show all kind of perversion? And it's based on a true story! Violence is shown in al it's messy details in movies but there is an ambivalent attitude to sex. I admire Oshima for having the courage to break that taboo. But still: is it porn or or is it art?
Artistically it was very vibrant in color. Some of the sex acts in it I didn't quite get in terms of how it progressed the story. Why does he need to insert an egg into her vagina other than "trying something new and erotic", I suppose if the main female protagonist has a strange sexual fetish then maybe, but it was the male protagonist, and the sex act wasn't even related to sadomasochism.
A beautiful and poetic movie where what is taboo and vulgar becomes an harmonious part of its context, the japanese culture. His world breaks the laws of intimacy and limits of desire, and show how beautiful could be the passion when it is left free in its purest expression. It's an other way to see things that Oshima exposes through two characters who appear very normal in their madness.

Der Film reihte sich ein in die Serie der Tabubrecher der 70er Jahre und die Szene mit dem Ei wurde damals auch in den Medien breit ausgeschlachtet. Doch eigentlich ist der Film ein Narrativ über die Konsequenz kompletter Abhängigkeit in einer sadomasochastischen Beziehung. In der Darstellung dieser unbdingten Konsequenz ist der Film heute noch immer mutig und ein Brechen aller diesbezüglich kolportierten Tabus.

Based on an actual case this film is almost all sex but in such a way that we are watching the progression of a couple's growing need for kinkier and kinkier acts leading to a rather final act. I can just imagine Freud would be in glee as to how this film seems to agree with one of his central tenets. Brilliantly filmed and acted.
