Ratings & Reviews

  1. Adam Whybray's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

3.7 stars. Unlike some of the reviewers here I have a soft spot for the eerily precocious Dakota Fanning of the early 2000s and she strikes me as a perfect choice here: just like how Darger was an adult child, Fanning always seemed like a child adult. As with 'Protagonist' Yu demonstrates her curiosity and compassion for outsider figures. A portrait of ferocious innocence.

  2. ilze zzz's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

  3. ennui.'s rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

Couldn't stop thinking the pedophilia* and other psychiatric disorders. I hope there was nothing about the first one*.

  4. pieomy's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

I only wish they hadn't used nasally Dakota "I've always got a cold" Fanning for the narration, and they hadn't animated the paintings.

  5. Mighty Quinn's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

A fascinating look at the life of reclusive artist/wrtier/janitor Henry Darger, who worked on his life's work in solitide, creating a vast world that he never thought would be shared with anyone. His life was sometimes sad and always lonely, but he made something of strange beauty, and the film captures its essense with great attention to detail in interviews with neighbours and narration from his autobiography.

  6. Eric Sherwood's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

    Great artist. Bad documentary. 2.5

  7. itwstlnd's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

  8. εξώτερο Διάστημα's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

the film depicts the type of girl that would probably appeal to the character in mircea cărtărescu's travesti: a frozen state of pre-pubescent feminity, undamaged by the "filth" of awoken sexuality. underage Dianas, juvenile jeanne d'arcs with burning hearts, serving in colorful divisions of an imaginary crusade.

  9. Andy King's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

Henry Darger is fascinating, and his art is remarkable, unpretentious, intricate... at times obsessively so, naive and, foremost, an inspiration to our generation today - a generation which creates primarily to gain attention, publicity and social status. A generation which creates to sell. Henry Darger creates only for himself. This documentary should be shown to all Art 101 students.

  10. La Schiff's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

Cheesifies a great artist. The narration is unbearable.

  11. Ultra Kebab's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

  12. Christopher R. Smith's rating of the film In the Realms of the Unreal

Excellent documentary tells the extraordinary story of outsider artist Henry Darger using imaginative animation to bring his art and writing to life. A fascinating and in-depth character study, but it also manages to retain the strange mystery that makes Darger and his work so intriguing.
