Ratings & Reviews

  1. Thomas Dods's rating of the film In the Valley of Elah

Despite the great performances and interesting subject matter, I found this film over earnest and rather plodding. Given the general critical appraisal of the film, I should give it another go.....

  2. Thomas's rating of the film In the Valley of Elah

Well paced, well shot drama with a social comment. Complex issues and emotions dealing with young men going to war. Beautifully understated performance by Tommy Lee Jones.

  3. Addy K.'s rating of the film In the Valley of Elah

Paul Haggis' manipulative writing style is somehow perfectly apt for this liberal-agenda movie thanks to a wholly sincere plea to stop sending young men to Warâ„¢. ELAH is a chamber drama crafted in tableaux using Roger Deakins' precise framing and naturalistic lighting. Haggis also has the good sense to let his fine actors carry the weight of a script that never shies away from being an open attack on American policy.

  4. Noiresque's rating of the film In the Valley of Elah

This is the best of the slew of American military themed pics of the past decade (and probably the most purely anti-*war*). However its success is mostly down to the extraordinary performance of Tommy Lee Jones (though in far smaller roles Brolin, Theron and Corbin are terrific).

  5. meancreek's rating of the film In the Valley of Elah

Very underrated. Tommy Lee Jones is incredible.
