Historically significant, Ingeborg Holm is one of Cinema's earliest attempts to tell a simple story of real life and tragedy. Cinematography, being in its early days, could have benefited some from later innovations, but the film's story does illicit compassion, and its end is paradoxically heartwarming and heartbreaking.
A 73-min. Swedish variation on Job's story. The long takes kill. Even for utterly dull, visually uninteresting scenes, Sjöström takes a minute or more. The ending impresses, but it takes way too long to get there, in total silence, low-def B/W, and without character development! [MUBI's synopsis is wrong, like the runtime. The family father was of modest means, and he dies before opening the grocery shop.]
