Despite the sometimes innovative stop-motion animation effects of Ray Harryhausen this is one dud of a fifties monster film. The 'monster' has so little screen time that it doesn't compensate for the wooden acting and sexist scripting. Funniest has to be the stock footage of traffic married with the monster effects where none of the cars seem fazed by the events whatsoever. Some unintentional laughs.
This is by no means a classic, but its a really bizarre example of 50s sexism that must be seen. The love triangle between the leads is also odd, in that the two dudes never really seem to be jealous of the other. Just an odd film. Harryhausen does some ok work here, but this is one of his lesser films. First Men on the Moon and 20 Million Miles...are better starting pts. Still fun, if mostly unintentionally. 3 stars
