The movie's elliptical structure suggests that the never ending cycle of exploitation and deception is yet another kind of curse inflicted upon the poor. Hope turns into resignation. The volcano, like the social consciousness of the subordinate classes, seems on the brink of erupting, but never does. Revolution postponed. Nespresso wins.

... absorbs our attention not only through the genuine characters and their deep emotions but also with the beauty of the location and the culture associated with the story.

There's definitely truth and respect in the way this Honduran community is represented.

Just because there are some indigenous people in a movie doesn't mean the movie would be good. In my opinion this was a pretty pointless and boring movie, but luckily only 90 minutes long.

  9. Dada Kubin's rating of the film Ixcanul

A powerful story with powerful cinematography. The moments on the volcano were haunting, the scenes with the daughter and the mother washing were touching and almost mystical, the sudden rush of the city bleak and detached. Maria Mercedes Coroy makes a wonderful screen debut as the despaired but strong-willed girl who wants more from her life than the village can offer and has to pay a high price for her aspirations.

FNC '15 Powerful debut feature from Bustamante that reflects on the vulnerability of the indigenous people of Guatemala in an universal tale easily identified with. A coffee plantation worker's daughter finds herself abandoned and pregnant first having to deal with the boss/fiancé and then with the bureaucracy of government who speak a language her family doesn't understand. The snakes of modern life approach.

  15. Guillermo Padilla's rating of the film Ixcanul
