I was alone in a foreign country, it was raining and I'd just been dumped when I went in to a cinema to see Jack Reacher (with subtitles). Thank you Tom Cruise et al. This is a really old fashioned, thrilling, serviceable as hell Hollywood film and I love that. Werner Herzog is one of the great actors that never tried.
Jack Reacher suffers from an ambiguous tone and a main character that could use a little more flaws. Cruise cowboy-ing his away through Pittsburg is cool but a little vulnerability would have added a much needed layer. Still, there a few details that make this film compelling, such as casting Herzog as a villain and the quasi-realistic, drawn-out, Bullitt-esque chase sequence (the car won't start? I'm all for it).
The main problem with the film is the casting of Tom Cruise who just seems so far outside his comfort zone to border on the edges of self parody. That isn't the only problem with this overbaked and under plotted holiday trifle. We also have the lack of believable villians, the unbelievable defence attorney and the so obvious crooked cop. Almost worth seeing for Werner Herzog..but only almost. Don't look for a sequel.
