I am a huge fan of Varda and Demy, too. Having seen almost all of both of their films added greatly to my enjoyment of this dramatization of his childhood (mixed with clips from his films as they relate to his childhood influences), and my adoration for Agnes Varda is even greater than before.
I'd never advocate anything less than full immersion in a film, but... man, Varda docs are perfect for long flights/hectic layovers. As easy to slip in & out of as they themselves slip between their own elements: Memory & presence, fact & insight... Like flowing with a tide. Engaging, and poignant, given Demy's death the year before its release. But as always, Varda manages sentiment without sap. Really lovely. 3.5
Oh!
The absolute genius of Varda for memory, intimacy, childhood, and the quotidian crystallize a magnificently warm biopic. The arrow flies true, and such a delightful and intentional use of color! Only she can overcome my vivid and abiding disdain for Demy's oeuvre.
