I genuinely feel bad for these girls for landing on a bad project. I do remember watching the cartoons, though I'm pretty sure I couldn't understand it back in the 80s. I could barely remember the stories. Regardless, you don't have to know the cartoon series to recognize how disastrous this movie was. With a botched storyline and a terrible script, it's also awfully clichéd. It really had no chance.
It's more than clear that Jon M. Chu and Scooter Braun simply wanted to create a Josie and the Pussycats/Spice Girls story for the internet-age, but decided to capitalize off of the little popularity this quirky eighties show retained. It has little to do with the show, and its clearly just used for name-recognition.for a film about being yourself, however, this is so fake and aritifical.
