Synopsis

Lilyan Sievernich follows John Huston on his set as he directs his production of “The Dead,” the film version of the short story by Irish modernist James Joyce, a work that would ultimately be the visionary filmmaker’s swan song.

The film shows us a fair sampling of his work with actors—more than we usually get in production documentaries—and whether he’s instructing a stage actress in how to be less theatrical or telling his daughter to turn her head slightly, there’s a courtly gentleness in his manner that invariably seems to produce the effects that he wants.
