The down home charm of Will Rogers in the title role almost saves this dated, clichéd, borderline racist film but only almost. Between the use of Stepin Fetchit and the gospel singing of 'the help' this films seems more like a Griffith relic then a Ford. Tale of 1890 Kentucky judge fails dramatically and provides a miss in the Ford canon.
A mixed film for me. Nothing here is exceptionally entertaining, except maybe Will Rogers, and even then only in a small capacity. As my first introduction to Stepin Fetchit it was a very dissonant film, and with its southern backdrop of Lost Cause supporters, seems a little too on-the-nose about America's race problems. Hoping to find better Rogers and Ford vehicles than this, but not a wholly regrettable viewing
