Re-working of the Carmen story, with a black Karmen Geï playing out her tragedy amidst the magical and chaotic urbanity of Senegal’s capital city. Seducting, provocating, sensual – all the ingredients for a perfect drama. With her charm, Karmen gets out of many situations.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Karmen Geï

21st century Senegalese cinema ! Loved it even better the 2nd viewing. From the very first scene, this film had me glued, I love everything about it. First of all it is based on an opera (great!), it is set in Senegal (cool!), and this Karmen is a sexy bisexual gangstress who seduces a cop. The sets and cinematography are luscious, and extra points for gangsterotica value.
