The writer of The Italian Job delivers another hugely enjoyable caper about a rag-tag group of characters trying to make off with a stash of gold. The juxtaposition between Hollywood battle footage & the film's very 60 theme song sets an immediately ironic tone; tempering studio era spectacle with anarchic anti-war commentary; finding something of a middle-ground between old-time sincerity & counter-culture satire.
Really more of a comic heist movie than a two-fisted action movie, though it does have plenty of rousing action scenes. A great cast of all-star character actors (it's really saying something when Clint Eastwood is overshadowed) and Hutton keeps the story clipping along even at two and a half hours. Maybe not quite as consistent as 'The Dirty Dozen', which it's clearly trying to emulate, but a whole lot of fun.
