There's really nothing new here - the plot and the various tropes deployed have all been used before. However, what made this work for me was the fact that it clearly was having fun with the whole set-up. The title alone tells you that it is a bit of a goof. More importantly, the location is almost the Platonic Ideal of the "deserted town as arena for violence." I can't think of a more wind-blown town than this one.
Great samurai film! Entertaining and interesting all the way through, I was never bored at all with this. Tatsuya Nakadai is amazing in this as well, his screen presence is undisputed. One of the coolest things about this film is how it mixes great action scenes along with humor and a whole western feel added to it.
