Niles and Carol Nelson are married doctors who save one of ganglord Gurney’s men. Gurney exploits them, then kills Niles leaving Carol to take the fall. He next kidnaps writer Bill Forrest to write his biography.
Really quite an odd film. Bogie plays a halfwit with a Napoleon complex, def a step down from his other gangster films like Petrified Forest, yet gets top billing here due to studio politics of the time. This is a very interesting film, as it feels like a film shot pre-Code. Some scenes immediately call Scarface to mind in their tone and camera angles. Idk if this was intentional by WB as a throwback, but cool anyhow
