From a wheelchair a handicapped white man rules an area of Africa as a living god. He rules the local natives through superstition and stage magic and he rules the few white people through sadism, keeping them virtual prisoners.

Remake of Tod Browning's West of Zanzibar (1928). Unfortunately William J. Cowen does not have the talent of Freaks's director and his mise en scene is too theatrical. So let's focus on the actors, Walter Huston, Lupe Velez, Virginia Bruce and Conrad Nagel who give a superb performance here. On the other side, let's keep quiet in front of Hollywood's description of African natives directly inspired by comic books.
