Ratings & Reviews

  1. Graveyard Poet's rating of the film Kwaidan

The colorful cinematography, surreal paintings/sets, and Toru Takemitsu's otherworldly, strange score create a meditative mood. My favorite story is the atmospheric, wintry "Woman of the Snow".

  2. Wee Hunk's rating of the film Kwaidan

It actually got a little meta there at the end. It's a good collection of ghost stories with great production values. I particularly liked the sound design.

  3. Sara-D's rating of the film Kwaidan

Special 5 star for the first tale.

  4. Dries's rating of the film Kwaidan

Sottilmente inquietante e riflessivo. Tecnicamente poi è un gioiello

  5. Fabio Osvaldo Carta's rating of the film Kwaidan

  6. Richmond Hill's rating of the film Kwaidan

It's the sound that lives on in the mind, although the imagery is indeed strong being a triumph of artificiality (reminiscent of Hein Heckroth's work for The Archers). The dissonance from the discursive musique concrete cuts through and against these stagey visuals to disquieting effect, although 'effect' is the word, as this is a glacially removed work inviting observation only with little emotional resonance.

  7. Andre's rating of the film Kwaidan

Although always beautifully shot, the stories appear to be placed in descending order of quality (as opposed to "Black Sabbath"). Nevertheless, the second is a beautifully artificial nightmare, and the first is a world class masterpiece, mixing genuine emotion (there's a Mizoguchi like empathy for women) and chills (the final ten minutes are horrifying in their use of sound).

  8. AdrianM.'s rating of the film Kwaidan

  9. Nelson Núñez's rating of the film Kwaidan

  10. João Rocha's rating of the film Kwaidan

  11. Bernardo Crastes's rating of the film Kwaidan

This is so lavish and gorgeous. What beautiful settings. The production contrasts with the simplicity of the stories, that, together, convey a unique mood, which can be quite bone-chilling, especially in the almost perfect Hoishi the Earless.

  12. ñiñiñi's rating of the film Kwaidan

  13. K_Tarr's rating of the film Kwaidan

This film is the nightmare counterpart to Kurosawa's "Dreams". Four folklorish ghost stories that are incredibly vibrant and atmospheric.

  14. FISCHER's rating of the film Kwaidan

  15. kartina obskura's rating of the film Kwaidan

  16. Severus Snape's rating of the film Kwaidan

  17. Alexander Dunkelberger's rating of the film Kwaidan

I think of a Japanese Mario Bava. A closer relative would be “House,” although this is nowhere near as wacky is that film. It has an artificiality that I like, a way with it’s images that gives it an unreality but not fakeness, which is my main problem with the (admittedly little) Bava I’ve seen. Haunting at it’s best.

  18. Hati Le's rating of the film Kwaidan

It's just a bit too long...

  19. Renton47's rating of the film Kwaidan

Less interesting for the tales themselves than the way they are told, this is a visual and aural treat. The heightened theatricality brings us closer to a sense of legend or myth, and the tales themselves have the punchy simplicity of folklore. The sound design impresses most, with a discordant musique concrete score that seems to infringe on the image. A masterful construction.

  20. Monasteries's rating of the film Kwaidan

"The Black Hair" and "The Woman of the "Snow were unreal, if a little overdone in the thematic department. "Hoichi the Earless" dragged on far too long but was ultimately rewarding. "In a Cup of Tea" was just kind of goofy and unnecessary. Overall set design was incredible (painted backdrops, physical sets, etc.), cinematography knocked it out of the park, and the score sounded like something Bobby Krlic would do.

  21. Alvise Narduzzi's rating of the film Kwaidan

Strano.

  22. L'immoralistee's rating of the film Kwaidan

  23. Fraticelli Matthieu's rating of the film Kwaidan

Magnifique !

  24. BUSTER TIERNEY's rating of the film Kwaidan
