  1. Paolo Utili's rating of the film Kwaidan

  2. Jeremy Tamura's rating of the film Kwaidan

Pure beauty on screen. A poem, a work of pure artistic content.

  4. lesminho's rating of the film Kwaidan

  5. Basqueville's rating of the film Kwaidan

  6. I.Camera's rating of the film Kwaidan

This is a beautiful film, an explosion of widescreen colour, and one that made me feel cheap for having not bought the Blu-Ray DVD. Kobayashi took four tales from classical horror folklore and gave them exquisite painted backdrops, mist clouds and sharp reds and blues. It is a world of cemeteries, terrible demons and deceitful ghosts, an inspiration for later J-horror images of long-haired girls and grotesque hags.

  7. Kuja's rating of the film Kwaidan

3,5. It was not meant to be scary, but uncanny. Singular, even for standard Japanese horror films. Sound design and indoor scenes lighting are appalling... One scene from Akira Kurosawa's Dreams refer to Woman of the Snow, no? (must be a popular folk lore) - and Hoichi, biwa hero!

  8. Psycoteraphy's rating of the film Kwaidan

Sound design, cinematography, production design, etc. This is a great horror anthology.

  9. neonalchodemon's rating of the film Kwaidan

интересно, но за историю с самураями минус такой жирный

  10. Eric Eidelstein's rating of the film Kwaidan

If the first two stories were alone this would be perfect to me. But seriously one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.

  11. Graveyard Poet's rating of the film Kwaidan

The colorful cinematography, surreal paintings/sets, and Toru Takemitsu's otherworldly, strange score create a meditative mood. My favorite story is the atmospheric, wintry "Woman of the Snow".

  12. Wee Hunk's rating of the film Kwaidan

It actually got a little meta there at the end. It's a good collection of ghost stories with great production values. I particularly liked the sound design.

  13. Erik F.'s rating of the film Kwaidan

  14. Sara-D's rating of the film Kwaidan

A special 5 star for the first tale.

  15. Dries's rating of the film Kwaidan

Sottilmente inquietante e riflessivo. Tecnicamente poi è un gioiello

  16. Fabio Osvaldo Carta's rating of the film Kwaidan

  17. Richmond Hill's rating of the film Kwaidan

It's the sound that lives on in the mind, although the imagery is indeed strong being a triumph of artificiality (reminiscent of Hein Heckroth's work for The Archers). The dissonance from the discursive musique concrete cuts through and against these stagey visuals to disquieting effect, although 'effect' is the word, as this is a glacially removed work inviting observation only with little emotional resonance.

  18. Andre's rating of the film Kwaidan

Although always beautifully shot, the stories appear to be placed in descending order of quality (as opposed to "Black Sabbath"). Nevertheless, the second is a beautifully artificial nightmare, and the first is a world class masterpiece, mixing genuine emotion (there's a Mizoguchi like empathy for women) and chills (the final ten minutes are horrifying in their use of sound).

  19. Jdsarmientoburgos's rating of the film Kwaidan

Four haunting Japanese ghost tales. One of the great Japanese horror films, that is both eerily creepy as well as a visual blast with a high production value.

  20. AdrianM.'s rating of the film Kwaidan

  21. Nelson Núñez's rating of the film Kwaidan

  22. João Rocha's rating of the film Kwaidan

  23. Bernardo Crastes's rating of the film Kwaidan

This is so lavish and gorgeous. What beautiful settings. The production contrasts with the simplicity of the stories, that, together, convey a unique mood, which can be quite bone-chilling, especially in the almost perfect Hoishi the Earless.

  24. ñiñiñi's rating of the film Kwaidan
