Even as it escalates provocations it never quite transcends banality, the detriment of aligning yourself so closely to masterpiece Dead Ringers. In some ways its ideas on emasculation, the inner conflict between tenderness and force, are conservative fears, and it's a better film when playful with subversion. Always mistrust depiction of repressed desires that can only imagine fucking/being fucked.
The twists are so uneven and deviant that made me experienced them more as nonsenses than effectively stimulating points. By dabbling in hazy mirror games and cheap, artificial glamour, Ozon squanders the chance of presenting something consistent, both thematic and genre-wise.
I had always admired Ozon's films but this was garbage. Joyce Carol Oates may grab some of her readers but this was not for me. Ozon loves writers and their writing process. But this work of Oates was way too odd. The positive aspect of the film--the lovely actress Marine Vacth. She displayed a range of emotions. Ms Bisset is always eye candy, even in the evening of her career, and full of style and poise.
I've really liked the moment of reflection that was present during the whole film, a special double-reflected architecture of all of the locations used in the film, as well as colors (the color of human skin is very natural and sensitive, tender). but the drama hidden behind all of those decorations was not impressive + i don't like stories that are not real (the very end i didn't like at all)
Ozon is a cinéphile, he knows all the films but can digest them and make it his own material. So there it starts like an Hitchcock thriller and turns midway around into a pure Cronenberg horror nightmare. Perverse twins, twisted script. Genre is not what you would expect from Ozon, but like Assayas last year, he succeeds thanks to precise stagging and elegant directing. A film that won't please everyone for sure.
