Lulu is a tough streetwise narcotics cop who thrives in this violent world, where sheer guts can overcome his squad’s deficiencies of money and equipment. Despite the ruthless environment that he lives and works in every day, he still manages somehow to maintain his humanity.

In 1992 we called these films police procedurals. At that time and maybe even now, the best of the best in police procedurals is Tavernier. L.627 is one, but not the only one. Looking back, many scenes are dirty, many places are disgraceful, but the people so unlike now, friendly, sort of unafraid, or able to see the good inside the bad. Today no good resides in the bad, or at least it appears no good.
Whoa. This is like a mini version of The Wire with Paris instead of Baltimore. So so so good. I was struggling with the fact that all drug dealers were black or Arabic—apparently L'Obs marked the film as racist back when it came out—but I do think that the issue is addressed with enough empathy and portrays the casual racism of law enforcement and society in a frank way. Again, quite like The Wire.
Ein Film aus den Zeiten, wo auch das Unspektakuläre und nicht komplett Psychologisierte noch erzählt werden konnte, selbst in Polizeifilmen. Heute wirkt der Film seltsam altmodisch, Geschichten über kleine Drogendealer und ihre sentimentalen Jäger interessieren nicht mehr. Auch die Motive sind wohl inzwischen alle ausgereizt. Ein Film aus einer anderen Zeit und Welt, wenn auch sehr sympathisch. Nostalgie aus Paris!
Tavernier did and awesome job depicting the reality of crime and police work in this film. The pacing of the movie does get long at parts, but this is made up for by the way the film keeps you interested. Anyone wanting to see a realistic police/crime film would enjoy this.
